Why Switching Off Over Christmas Could Be the Best Thing for Your Personal Brand

Every year as Christmas approaches, I notice the same feeling creeping in. A kind of mental heaviness that isn’t quite exhaustion, but isn’t far off it either. It’s the weight of a year spent showing up, thinking, creating, deciding, being visible, doing the do, and striving. And alongside it comes that familiar pressure to “use the downtime wisely,” to plan the next quarter, the next years goals, to finally get clear on my personal brand, my content, and what comes next.

For a long time, I believed that clarity came from effort. I treated creativity like something I could force if I just gave it enough time and attention. I would sit at my laptop, open a blank document, and tell myself that this was the moment everything would click. More often than not, it didn’t. The harder I tried to think my way out of a creative block, the more stuck I felt. It became a loop of pressure, frustration, and self-doubt that only made things worse.

Looking back now, it’s obvious. Every creative blockage I’ve ever had has only ever been resolved when I stopped trying to fix it. Not when I pushed harder or added more structure, but when I fully stepped away. When I stopped asking my brain to perform and instead gave it permission to rest. Some of my clearest ideas have arrived in moments that looked completely unproductive from the outside. Walking without a destination. Laughing with people I love. Travelling somewhere unfamiliar. Doing things purely for enjoyment, with no agenda attached.

There’s something about switching off that changes the way we think. When we’re constantly reacting to messages, meetings, and notifications, our brains stay in problem-solving mode. It’s efficient, but it’s not creative. Creativity needs space. It needs stillness. It needs moments where your thoughts are allowed to wander instead of being directed. That’s why ideas so often come in the shower, on holiday, or just as you’re falling asleep. It’s not coincidence. It’s what happens when the pressure lifts.

Christmas offers us a rare opportunity to do exactly that, and yet so many of us resist it. Especially if you’re building a personal brand, running a business, or creating content online. It can feel risky to switch off, as though rest means falling behind or losing momentum. But in my experience, the opposite is true. The times I’ve come back strongest, clearest, and most confident in my work have always followed periods where I truly disconnected.

When I say switched off, I don’t mean resting while mentally planning content or thinking about what to post next. I mean genuinely letting go. Being present. Allowing boredom. Allowing fun. Allowing yourself to exist without needing to produce something from it. That’s when the noise quietens, the comparisons fade, and your own voice starts to come back.

If you’re feeling stuck creatively right now, or frustrated with your content, your visibility, or your personal brand, maybe the answer isn’t another strategy or framework. Maybe it isn’t a new platform or a better plan. Maybe the most productive thing you can do over Christmas is step away and give your mind the space it’s been asking for all year.

When January comes, there will be plenty of time to plan, build, and show up again. But imagine starting the year from a place of clarity instead of burnout. Imagine creating content that feels aligned instead of forced, and building a personal brand that reflects who you actually are, not just what you think you should be saying.

The truth is, your creativity doesn’t need more discipline. It needs more trust. Trust that rest is part of the process, not a reward for finishing it. Trust that stepping away won’t undo everything you’ve built. And trust that your best ideas will find you when you stop chasing them.

So this Christmas, if you can, let yourself switch off properly. Have fun. Be present. Let your thoughts wander. You might be surprised by how much clearer everything feels when you come back.

And if you need permission to switch off, this is it.

Have a fantastic time over the festive period, see you all in the new year 🎉
