What Happens to Your Personal Brand When Life Falls Apart? (Real Talk Inside)

This blog isn’t about sugar-coating personal branding. This blog is the truth.

Some days, some weeks, some months, are hard. Like, life-is-happening-and-I-can’t-even-think-about-content kind of hard. And when life feels heavy, the last thing most of us feel like doing is showing up online.

Let’s take last week, for example.

This is the reality of being a human being, not a “content machine,” not a “walking brand,” just human.

My dog, who’s been slowly deteriorating for a while, took a sharp turn for the worse. She couldn’t walk anymore. She stopped eating. And I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life so far, to take her to the vets and say goodbye.

Dog lovers, you’ll get this. She’s not just a pet. She’s family. And knowing they’re suffering doesn’t make that final car ride any easier. Walking into the vets, knowing you’ll be walking out alone? It’s a special kind of heartbreak.

(And if dogs aren’t your thing, insert your own “rock bottom” moment here. We all have them.)

Last week, I was a wreck. I cried more than I’ve ever cried in my 40 years on this planet. I could barely concentrate. I did the absolute bare minimum to keep things moving, and even that felt like a lot.

And my personal brand? Yeah… definitely not my priority.

But here’s the part I’m grateful for:

I’d scheduled some content in advance. I’d built in enough breathing room that I didn’t have to be “on” when I couldn’t be. And because my personal brand includes real-life snippets (not just polished lessons and highlight reels), I felt okay to share a little of what I was going through, not in a woe-is-me way, not for pity or performative vulnerability, but just for honesty.

This is life. This is the reality sometimes. And this is exactly what personal branding should make space for.

Because personal branding isn’t about pretending everything’s perfect. It’s about building real trust with real people. And trust doesn’t come from the highlight reel. It comes from the human stuff.

You can have the best personal brand strategy in the world. You can have gorgeous brand guidelines, killer content, clear-as-day goals. But life? Life will still throw curveballs. The rug will get pulled from under your feet. And when it does, it’s okay to pause. To feel. To not be as “on it.”

That’s not failure. That’s just being a person.

And honestly? That’s why I believe in support systems. One of the biggest perks of working with a personal branding agency is exactly this: When life hits hard, you’ve got someone in your corner, making sure your message still shows up, even when you can’t.

All of our client work is planned and scheduled in advance. So while I was falling apart behind the scenes last week, their content? Still ticking along like clockwork.

My own brand didn’t look perfect. But it stayed honest. And in the long run? That’s what matters the most.

Here’s my tribute the the best (most characterful) little dog ever, at least her memory will live on through my personal brand – RIP Ruby Lady.
