If the idea of talking about money makes you want to shrink into your oversized blazer and politely change the subject, this blog’s for you.
Here in the UK (and in plenty of other places too), there’s a long-standing habit of treating money like it’s a bit impolite. We’re taught to be humble, to wait our turn, and to believe that anything that sounds a little too exciting must surely be a scam, not everything that enables you to make money is “too good to be true” thanks for that phrase Mum!
If you’re building a personal brand, and especially if you’re putting your time, energy, and expertise out into the world, it’s time we had a very real conversation about monetising it. Not in a sleazy, cookie-cutter sales funnel way. But in a human-first, confidence-led, authentic way that reflects the value you bring to the table. You do bring value to the table BTW.
Why Should You Monetise Your Personal Brand?
Because you’re already doing the work!
If you’re sharing your knowledge online, creating content, helping others, building community, or leading conversations in your industry, you already have a personal brand. The next step is aligning that brand with opportunities that pay you for what you bring to the table.
Here’s what monetisation might look like:
- Paid speaking or workshop gigs
- Digital products or courses
- Brand collaborations or affiliate income
- Group programs or coaching
- Being top-of-mind for dream-fit clients who already trust you before you even meet
The key here is alignment. When your personal brand reflects the real you, not a watered-down version of what you think people want, you attract the kinds of opportunities that feel exciting and expansive. And the opportunities out there are endless, especially in the digital age we all live in.
The next time you’re scrolling on your phone, sucked into the vortex of one of the social media channels newsfeeds, keep your eyes peeled for people who are monetising their personal brands. In what ways are they monetising, how do they come across when sharing, what do you like/dislike about how they’re monetising?
But Isn’t Monetising a Personal Brand A Bit Cringe?
Only if you make it cringe, it doesn’t have to be. And don’t compare what someone else is doing online, compared to what you could do. If you do think someone is cringe online, look into why you think that, what they’re doing. Actively notice it, so you can avoid the same mistakes with yours.
This isn’t about becoming an influencer or shouting into the void. It’s about positioning yourself clearly and confidently in a way that opens doors. It’s about giving people a way to work with you, learn from you, or pay you for the value you already provide.
If we stay stuck in the mindset of “monetisation = selling out”, we risk burning out and missing out. And for what? To stay polite?
Let’s reframe this: monetising your personal brand isn’t about being salesy. It’s about being seen. And when people see you clearly, they can value you appropriately.
Also people need the help you have to offer, if you charge for that help, they get their issue solved and you make money, it’s a win win for both of you. We’ve all got bills to pay, we all need to earn money, let’s stop talking ourselves out of it!
You Can’t Monetise a Brand You Haven’t Built
This part’s the most important.
If you’re dreaming of more income streams, more aligned clients, more impact, you need to start showing up now. Not when your website is perfect. Not when you’ve hit some magical follower count.
Now!
Building a personal brand takes time, intention, and yes, a bit of bravery. But it’s also one of the most sustainable ways to future-proof your career or business. Because no one can replicate your voice, your story, or your way of doing things. But nothing will happen, and you’ll attract NO opportunities your way if you stay invisible.
How to Start Building a Brand You Can Monetise
If you’re ready to take the leap but not sure where to begin, here are a few places to start:
- Clarify your message. What do you want to be known for? What are you already good at? How can you help people?
- Create valuable content. Start sharing what you know. Blog posts, videos, podcasts, carousels, pick your lane and just go for it.
- Show your face. People buy from people. Let us see the human behind the brand.
- Build trust. Be consistent. Be real. Don’t ghost your audience, interact with them.
- Make it easy to pay you. Got an offer? Make it visible. No more hiding your work.
