You’ve probably heard it a million times before – your personal brand is your secret weapon for business growth. Maybe you’ve started creating one, you’re six months in, maybe even longer. But how do you know if it’s actually working for you?

You’re super busy and you’re not sure if the hours spent crafting content, networking, and building your digital presence are paying off? Or maybe you’re still feeling invisible, your content doesn’t get much engagement or likes, you feel like everything you’re putting out to the world isn’t being seen?

Let’s dive into this for you, cause let’s face it, it sucks when you’re putting in lots of effort and you don’t know if it’s even working!

Why Your Personal Brand Matters in 2025:

For small business owners and entrepreneurs especially, a strong personal brand is no longer optional. In today’s digital-first world, people buy from people they know, like, and trust. Your personal brand is what sets you apart in a crowded marketplace. It’s what builds connection, establishes authority, and ultimately drives business growth.

But if you’re not showing up online, you’re missing out on one of the most powerful tools for growing your business. You’re essentially invisible to potential clients and collaborators. But the good news? It’s never too late to change that. You can start personally branding anytime, at any age, in any area of the world!

And if you have got a personal brand, but you feel like it’s not working well, it’s never to late to take stock, to audit your current efforts and pivot (anyone else always hear Ross from Friends shouting while carrying the sofa when they see the word pivot!).

Signs Your Personal Brand Is Working:

Here’s how to gage whether your personal brand is making an impact, it might well be, but maybe you just haven’t given it the time it needs to see physical results:

  • Your Audience Recognises You – Are you known in your industry or community? If people frequently mention they’ve seen your content or heard about you, that’s a great sign your personal brand is resonating. Not everyone will engage with your content, there are a lot of lurkers out there, some may watch without you ever knowing!
  • You’re Attracting Opportunities – Are new clients or sales, speaking engagements, or collaborations coming your way? A strong personal brand draws opportunities to you instead of you having to chase them. When you’re visible to the world all sorts of opportunities come your way, look out for them all, even the small ones. In time the opportunities will grow, but at first they might start on the smaller scale.
  • Engagement Over Follower Count – It’s not about having thousands of followers; it’s about having an engaged audience. Are people commenting on your posts, sharing your content, or sending you direct messages? Engagement is a key indicator that your message is connecting. Five engaged people is better than a million who don’t engage, interact and would never do business, work with you or refer you onto others.
  • You’re Building Trust and Authority – Are people seeking your advice or turning to you as an expert in your field? A trusted personal brand establishes you as the go-to person in your area of expertise.
  • Your Business Is Growing – Is your brand visibility translating into tangible results? This could mean increased sales, more leads, or better client retention. Remember with this last one, this will take time. People need to see what you have to offer multiple times in order to buy or do business with you, how consistently you show up to your personal brand plays a huge part in this success.

If It’s Not Working, Here’s Why:

If you’re not seeing these signs, don’t panic. Here are some common reasons your personal brand might not be working for you just yet:

  • You’re Not Showing Up Consistently – Visibility requires regular effort. Sporadic posting or inconsistent messaging can confuse your audience. This is why we harp on about consistency and using scheduling tools all the time, you need to show up consistently for long enough saying the same things.
  • Your Messaging Is Too Generic – If you’re trying to appeal to everyone, you’re resonating with no one. Get clear on your target audience and speak directly to them, in your own voice. The only way to stand out is to be you, so don’t use too much AI, don’t use too much corporate speech, your message should come from you, but speaking to your ideal client/customer, helping them solve their problems.
  • You’re Not Sharing the “Real” You – People connect with authenticity. If your online presence feels overly polished or impersonal, it might be time to let your personality shine through. See our point above, be you!
  • You’re Not Leveraging the Right Platforms – Are you active where your ideal audience hangs out? Focus on the platforms that matter most to them. On this point, also don’t spread yourself too thin. If you’re a one man band doing this, being on every platform might not be the best plan. Choose the platform your ideal audience is and hone your skills talking to them on that platform first before moving onto others.

Steps to Turn It Around:

If you’re feeling invisible there’s still hope, here’s how to get your personal brand back on track:

  • Audit Your Current Brand – Take an honest look at your online presence. Does it reflect who you are and what you stand for? Is it clear and cohesive? You could do this with a friend or family member you can trust, sometimes seeing it through others eyes helps. We’re always on hand for profile audits if you need them.
  • Define Your Unique Value – What sets you apart from others in your industry? Double down on your strengths and let them shine in your branding. Sometimes we can get so caught up on our weaknesses and what we’re not good at and how unworthy we are, this holds us back. But we all have our strengths and superpowers, unlock yours and let those shine brighter than your weaknesses.
  • Show Up Consistently – Commit to a posting schedule. Share valuable content regularly and engage with your audience authentically. You can’t post sporadically and expect results, so 2025 needs to be your year to get on top of your content game. You also can’t post and ghost and expect results, so make sure you’re also engaging daily, set aside 15 minutes in the morning and evening to engage with your audience as a minimum. Also add connections daily too, expand your network don’t wait for them to come to you.
  • Share Stories, Not Just Facts – People connect with stories. Share your journey, lessons learned, and even your challenges. This builds trust and relatability. We see it all to often, boring corporate graphics and jargon posts, these only attract tumbleweed. Share your stories, share real life challenges and triumphs, people are nosey by nature, hook them into your world.

The Cost of Staying Invisible:

If you’re not showing up online, you’re leaving money, connections, and opportunities on the table. Your competitors are building their personal brands – and they’re reaping the rewards of that. Don’t let 2025 pass you by without taking action!
