We’re very much in a world of information overload at the moment. One guru is telling you to niche down so far that you can only focus on the smallest aspect of yourself to create a successful personal brand, then on the other side we have a rise in multipassionates who have their fingers in all sorts of entrepreneurial pies.
Which person should you listen to, and what advice should you follow?
I’m a huge believer in the fact that us humans are multifaceted, we have the capacity to take on multiple roles and have multiple passions. Therefore we should be able to share more of a 360 degree view of our worlds through our personal brands without confusing our audience so much, so they don’t have a clue what you do, stand for, or why they should keep following you.
But you need to trust your own gut on this, if you can narrow yourself down to a niche, then that could work really well for your personal brand too. But if you can’t shrink yourself down and squeeze yourself into a niche, then keep reading…
In this weeks Brand You Podcast, we’re talking about the rise of polyworking and managing your personal brand when you have multiple jobs, businesses or passions you’d like to share with the world. You can listen to this episode through the links below:
Thanks to the digital age we’re living in, polyworking has become very popular and people are juggling multiple businesses and streams of income. As with all personal brands, you absolutely don’t have to share everything with the world, you could choose to only share one of your working sides, but you can also share more.
If you do want to share more, the challenge becomes – How do you brand yourself with multiple roles? You might ask:
“How do I introduce myself?”
“Will people get confused?”
“How do I keep my messaging clear?”
When you’re creating a strategic personal brand you need to get clear on what you stand for and who you are, you need to understand your value offering to the world, even if you have more than one. A good idea if you are polyworking would be to find your common thread. Think about what links all your roles together? A skill, mission, or value?
There will be something that you find that ties them all together, your past story, your challenges, the lessons you’ve been through, what your actual mission is. Dig deep and write your life story down, find the themes that align it all for you.
When you then set up your online profiles you can craft a unified bio or about section, bringing it all together. But keep it as simple as possible and highlight the big picture of what you do. You can then weave in the threads in your content to explain more to people.
You can still create a thriving personal brand as a multifaceted human with multiple roles. Your uniqueness is your strength, your story ties it all together and is like no others. Own the entrepreneurial spirit you have inside and celebrate all the sides of you.
If you do find it too difficult to craft a personal brand while polyworking, let us help at Quirq. It’s our job to get strategic with your personal brand, we can help you understand how to weave all your narratives into one cohesive brand.
